“The hot jets feel amazing.” Rissa sighed. “I carry all my stress in my feet.”

Even the nail tech stopped filing Lily’s toenails and looked up.

“In your feet?” Lily bit the inside of her cheek not to laugh. “I’ve never heard anyone say that in my life.”

“I know it sounds weird, but it’s true.” She shrugged. “As punishment, my mother used to make me stand in the corner of the kitchen by the backdoor when I was a kid. There was always a draft and my feet and legs would cramp up.” With an annoyed exhale she threw a crumpled up tissue at Lily. “Don’t laugh. They would ache for days afterward.”

“So you’re saying now you have emotional foot pain as a result?”

“No.” She exhaled an expletive. “Oh, forget it…”

Lily laughed out loud. “I’ll have to remember to tell Mitch to buy you one of those foot spas and put in for a lifetime supply of Epson salts. With two kids and another on the way, you’re stress levels are going to go through the roof.”

Despite the dirty look from Rissa, Lily’s nail tech giggled. “My ma always said with one kid you’re a parent, with two you’re a referee. Three or more, you’re a zookeeper.”

“Ha! I love it. That just earned you a huge tip!”

Rissa was not amused. “Funny. You’re both just hilarious.”

The nail tech dropped her eyes back to Lily’s toes, avoiding Rissa’s glare.

“Relax, Ris. I’m teasing and you know it’s funny, so stop.”

The nail tech working on Rissa’s pedicure turned the jets off and put a towel down on the base of the pedicure chair. “Put those stressed out dogs right here and I’ll polish them up pretty.”

Rissa exhaled hard despite everyone else’s laughter. “Okay, she may be getting a big tip…” She gestured to the girl drying Lily’s feet. “…but you’re not.”

The young woman’s eyes went wide and she dropped her nail file in the foot basin. “I’m sorry, ma’am, I was just kidding around.”

Lily smacked the side of Rissa arm. “See? Maybe we should start calling you pickle.” Lily smiled at the nervous tech. “It’s okay, honey. I’ll tip you even if Miss Grinch doesn’t.”

Rissa smirked. “That won’t be necessary, and I am not a Grinch.” She stuck her tongue out at Lily before turning her attention to the girl. “It’s all good, sweetheart. No worries,” she said with a smile. “Just push my cuticles back and polish me up.”

Lily sighed. “As much as I’d love a paraffin massage, just polish me, too. We’re a little pressed for time.”

“Hot date?” the girl asked.

Lily nodded. “Yup, with a shopping cart at Extra Foods.”

The girl dropped her gaze again, grabbing Lily’s bottle of red polish.

“Should I call Mitch and give him a time guestimate?”

Lily shrugged. “They’re probably already bellied up to the bar at The Wild Cat, but sure, let him know we’ll be there in about twenty minutes.”

“Are you the girl who’s set to marry Mitch Paris?”

Rissa looked down at the girl working on her toes. The woman held the polish brush above Rissa’s pinky toe, the nail half coated in raspberry pink.
